You're Charging me...WHAT???

When we last met, I talked about pricing structure for freelance designers. The idea of pricing per project or per hour is not unique, whether you're a software engineer, or commercial painter, you want to price your task to be competitive, yet at the same time you're typically not painting white walls because you absolutely love to paint!  So, what's the best formula? To frankly answer to this mystery.....I will say there is no formula that works 100% of time. No matter which way you price your product, there will be times when you make a higher profit, and times when you lose. FLAT RATE BILLING? Great idea for starting out. You probably will charge lower prices, and maybe earning $5 / hour...For example: You're a novice and you charge $100 for a flyer (not a bad price) but you spend 15 hours completing it. However, as a beginner, you want that time to acclimate, build your style and build your clientele.  For that reason, the flat-rate billing system also discounts YOUR value. You could charge $250 to design a logo; that's a pretty competitive price. How long will you spend on that logo? 5 hours or 25? Hourly billings make much more sense, with a HUGE caveat – no one has endless money – so you had better make sure you have a range in mind of what you will charge your client, or you will be left with the bill. When we meet again, I will visit some strategies of how to let a client know you will be billing them by the hour…..
