Working as a freelancer
is rewarding, fulfilling and often challenging. Let me start with challenges... it's definitely challenging to find consistent work. So much of what I do is from "word of mouth" that often it's a feast or famine. I would much prefer a regular dose of nutrition, rather than over eating or being hungry! But that is not the only challenge. Often customers are challenging too, which leads into the point of this blog: do I charge by project or by the hour? In nearly every professional field knowing your customer is the best way to keep the customer satisfied; therefore sizing up a customer before I quote on a job has become the key to my personal satisfaction as I work on a project. Every client, regardless of their financial status wants to know, "how much does it cost?" I have developed a "survey" that helps me focus the client. It has a dual purpose, it helps me uncover truly the design style the client prefers, but it also helps me uncover the true personality of my client......more about that in my next posting.....
